Worship Recap 01.22.12... "Thy Kingdom Come"

Continuing with our Lord's Prayer series, today's focus was on Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Personally with all that's gone on in my life this past week, I've been really fixed on His kingdom here and now.

I pulled out a couple of our older songs for this morning because they were supportive of the kingdom message. Even with lighter attendance than usual (we had some icy roads) they were well received.

We started breaking in a new tech person this morning. What a joy it is to see who God leads to fill in the needs of his church. Welcome Kevin!

Worship Recap 01.15.12... "Daddy Dearest"

We started a new sermon series today on the Lord's Prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. It left me reflecting on how my relationship with God has grown over the years. What started out as very sterile and distant has become a close and personal friendship.

We've had a couple young adults (from our team) home from college the past month or so and it's been rewarding to see them offer their gifts each week. We'll be wishing them a safe return and a blessed spring semester.

The team was on again this morning. Great energy and spirit! The plan worked well and the arrangements were congregational friendly. All this while a stubborn winter cold won't allow everyone to get healthy. Blessed!

Worship Recap 01.08.12... "Star Sunday"

This morning we recognized Epiphany with our traditional Star Sunday. Everyone in the congregation received a spirit led star that contained one of the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). I received the star of peace.

Our message was delivered by a previous staff member (Mark Ristine) who prayerfully asked us to consider that in the coming year our star not be a destination, but a continuing guide to God.

The first winter bug knocked out three of our team today, but on the positive side we also welcomed back one of our brothers (Bill Bell) on piano.

As for the music plan, I set We Fall Down into a very different arrangement this morning and experienced an engaged and energetic congregational response. The only disappointed was that we didn't capture a recording of it.

Okay, so over the past few weeks... how many times did you find yourself doing or saying what you said you wouldn't? How many times did you find yourself buying or spending what you said you wouldn't? How many times did you find yourself eating or drinking what you said you wouldn't? The holidays have a way of wearing us down. Wearing us down and then attacking at our weakest moment. Attacking in ways that we find hard to resist. And before you know it all our wishes for a different kind of season are just that... wishes.

It's not too late to get back on track. To right the path. To make a difference. To be the light in a sometimes very dark world.

We are loved by a very forgiving God. One that wants us to do good, to be love, and to succeed. So lets be honest, lets be accountable.Were you a prisoner of the holidays?

Christmas Eve Recap: 12.24.11... "O Baby"

I prepared and participated in three of our six services this past week. All were blessed in their own unique way.

On Wednesday night, December 21st, we celebrated an unplugged Christmas service in our Chapel. Because of the early date we opened our time together with an Advent feel and led up to the Christmas story. It was quaint and warm with a real homey, spiritual sense.

Saturday night at 5pm we had our family service which included participation by all the young children. It's always a celebratory experience and this year was no different.

Our Christmas Praise service was at 7pm and had a few wrinkles as usual in trying to keep it fresh and vibrant. Along with a couple of new arrangements we changed our template from years past and the response was very positive.

He's Coming

We were blessed to return to the Souled Out Coffeehouse this past Friday night. My relationship with them has grown over the past ten years. We've seen three different venues, and a few different faces, but the core group of providers and the family of supporters always remains.

I don't think I've ever had the same lineup twice when I've visited here. This past Friday I brought The Quartet. A new formation that features Andrew Barber, Gary Burger and Billy Mettinger on acoustic guitars, upright bass and cajon. It's been a very inspiring season so far.

He's Coming was written as a monthly songwriting challenge at theworshipcommunity.com in August of 2010. I introduced it at Advent last year and it was really well received at my home church. Since then it's also been a strong song when I've led worship at visiting churches, conferences and in concert.

Worship Recap 12.18.11... "God Waits"

How favorable is it that our God in His wisdom sees fit to be patient with us. How blessed we are that He has the strength to continue to watch us struggle to get it. How fortunate we are that our our God waits.

We celebrated the fourth week of Advent with the foretelling of the birth of Jesus from Luke 1:26-38. I love the angel's response to Mary that she's highly favorable to God. How cool to be told by an angel that you are regraded or treated with preference by God.

To lead into the message we sang Gabriel's Message. We used a wonderful arrangement from Sting's If On a Winter's Night CD.

Remember, if you're growing tired of the Christmas season, you're not doing Advent right.

Eddy Mann’s SomethingBeautiful & New is a worship album with a purpose. Yes, Mann spendsmuch time praising and worshiping his God. He also knows, though, that if TheAlmighty is to work effectively through His people, the chosen ones need to getalong together.

The second song on this breezy pop album is "All Are Welcome." This song is almost like the opening announcements at a church service, where the speaker welcomes one and all to worship.

Worship Recap 12.11.11... "Restore Us, O God"

I woke this morning with a food hangover and a little short on sleep... it was nobody's fault but might own. So after taking ownership of my failures, I asked and received a spiritual helping hand and proceeded to have an energetic and up-lifting time of worship.
We celebrated the third week of Advent (Joy) with the help of Psalm 126. Restoration is an ongoing project within me. Both spiritually and creatively I continuously need to take account of where I am, and where I'm going. Regretfully I often fall short of seeing all the blessings in my life, so as this season continues I'll be working to become ever aware of all joy that surrounds me.

I mentioned this last week but it bears repeating A Baby Will Come [Bill Wolf] has been a wonderful addition to our advent season.

Remember if you're growing tired of the Chrismas season, you're not doing Advent right.

Worship Recap 12.04.11... "Expect the Unexpected"

Expect the unexpected... imagine an excited high school junior arriving at church for rehearsal at 7:45am to lead worship. Our message this morning was on expecting the unexpected through this Advent and Christmas season. Funny how my day started with the perfect example.

This week we continued to use a combination of traditional and new seasonal songs. A Baby Will Come written by Bill Wolf was a new song that was wonderfully received. I only used the first three verses which were perfect for the season of advent and finished with the chorus from He's Coming a very popular song I introduced last year. It was a great way to end our time of worship.

Worship Recap 11.27.11... "The Colors of Anticipation"

The Gift is on it's way... and so we enter the season of Advent. A season of waiting, and of hope. A time when we are filled with the colors of anticipation. Let's get creative and paint the story in a new way this year.

Our music plan tied in very well with our message this morning. In preparing it I reached back and used a number of seasonal and familiar songs. By using some new vocal arrangements we were able to breath new life into them where they became fresh again.

I read a quote from the German poet Angelus Silesius last night, one that I'm going to let soak in over the season... If in your heart you make a manger for his birth, then God will once again become a child on earth.

Worship Recap 11.20.11... "Change"

Nothing tests a faith barometer greater then change. Oh how we can fear, stress and worry about change. But that's not really a faithful stance. We're taught that trusting in God (I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears... Ps 34:4) removes all fear, stress and worry. So when change occurs we need to fix our eyes on the one who's watching over our lives, the one who loves us, the one who created us to prosper and to live in fellowship with him.

I've personally grown to love change... I find it exciting and refreshing. I trust in God's will for my life. God's will, that's the key phrase for me. If it's God's will that's being done then I'm good, so that's where my prayers are concerned. That whatever change is coming my way is God's will and not anyone elses particular spin or politics.

So when our senior pastor revealed to me earlier this week, and to the congregation today, that he was retiring, my first response was on how he was doing and my joy for him. It's my prayer that our congregation will find peace in focusing on the exciting future that God has planned for us and trust in God's will as we pray that it will be done.

Review: Something Beautiful & New

Whenit comes to Inspirational music, Eddy Mann does not fall into the category of“the yesteryear artist." If anything, he may be a true legend! Something Beautiful & New by EddyMann is filled with great worship songs.

Anexcellent stand out is “The Peaceable Kingdom” the vocals are simple butbeautiful as a singing songbird. "It does not matter what Ido, without love I’m nothing” are powerful words. While the overall sound of thisalbum may be reminiscent of some modern worship, the songs contain an honesttransparency that is hard to find.

Review: John Mark McMillian - Economy

On Economy, John Mark McMillan continues to create vivid lyrical imagery and supports it with moving melodic and rhythmic arrangements. The writing here is once again beautiful and at times even disconcerting. John definitely has a knack for descriptive lyrics and spirit filled melodies.

His vocals can be delicate and light as in the song Chemicals where he softly sings …Well, everybody’s drilling for a fountain of youth, but sometimes in these fountains they drown, and at other moments he can deliver a strong and rough performance as in the chunky chorded Daylight with the chorus …We live on the edge of darkness.

We continued with our Formed and Re-formed series this morning focusing on loving all and serving all in Jesus name. Being drawn from our Statement of Faith, this continues to be an inspiring series for me. As I write each week, I've gotten a chance to really spend some quality time meditating on each of the points that make up our statement.

Our team took an attendance hit this week, even early this morning we were still experiencing changes. Rehearsal went well but we weren't on top of our game today. Thankfully, by the response afterwards, it was clear that it didn't affect the congregation.

Today we continued our Formed and Re-formed series by focusing on the following statement - We believe that the questions are as important as the answers, that living the mystery is a more sacred position than church tradition and doctrine. We also recognized All Saints Day, so my plate was full as I prepared this past week.

Once again our team was overflowing with spiritual energy and the congregation was actively engaged throughout. (I'm guessing the extra hour of sleep didn't hurt this morning. The sanctuary was filled and included quite a few visitors.) After a surprising October snow storm, we warmed things up this morning with an energetic effort that featured some really sweet vocal harmonies.

Reformation Sunday also represents our church's anniversary [55th] and the affirmation of some of our youth. It's always a festive day with visitors [and cake] and today was no different.

I introduced a new setting for A Mighty Fortress this week which turned into a beautiful quiet and reflective moment before our message.

Need vs Greed Musically Speaking

Recently I heard Rick Warren use the phrase need vs greed while delivering a message on contentment concerning our possessions. It wasn't until a day or so later that I used the term while speaking at a neighboring church's worship team rehearsal. In the past couple of weeks it's been a wonderful metaphor for teaching about musical space and how a song needs to breathe.

Does the song need every note I'm playing? Does playing all these notes help to deliver the lyrical message? Should I be content with my contribution as is or am I playing some greedy notes?

This past week, on a return visit, I made the reference (after the first run though of a new song...), "Okay, lets take it from the top without the greedy notes." After a few sheepish grins, we ran the song down again and much to everyones agreement it really felt better and began to take life.

Using fresh terms and phrases to teach is not a novel idea, but one that definitely works. Repeating the same line over and over can sometimes diminish it's effect. A simple phrase can also sometimes help get a difficult or emotional point across without embarrassing anyone.

So let's get creative as we strive to inspire our teams to a deeper worship experience.

Worship Recap 10.23.11... "Inclusiveness"

Continuing with our Formed and Re-formed series, this morning we focused on inclusiveness. What it looks like to the church and to our lives. Preparing this week I spent some time evaluating my own life.

A week ago I participated in an event that had seven different artists on the bill. What impressed me the most was the wide variety of participants. There was southern gospel, contemporary christian rock, metal, worship and praise, R&B, traditional gospel and these were offered by young and old alike. I particularly enjoyed the diversity and the inclusive atmosphere. It was the perfect backdrop for me as prepared the music plan and entered the sanctuary this morning.

As a team we had a very smooth and seamless flow this morning. I noticed early on that our congregation was really connected and spiritually alive. I actually had to gain my composure at one point as I looked out and saw all those familiar faces giving glory and honoring God.

Recap: Night of Worship 10.15.11

This past Saturday night we held a night of worship that was at once both beautiful aesthetically and musically. There were many contributors that led to the evenings pleasant conclusion. Having many thoughts and helping hands made the preparation and worship especially enjoyable.

The first half of the evening was presented in an acoustic environment. During that section the focus was on creation and our musical past. To facilitate our crossover to a more progressive and electric setting for the second half we incorporated a spoken word video that was spun from Psalm 23. The second half focused on God's gracious and glorious love for his creation.

Stretching our worship palette is always on my mind so I was really excited about bringing in a very worshipful interpretive dancer. She brought an element that was certainly not common place in our worship experience, but was overwhelmingly appreciated not to mention inspiring.

It was a wonderful, spiritual, engaging night of worship that was followed by some home cooked sweets and fellowship. I've said this before, but it bears repeating, I'm surrounded by so much talent and love... I'm a blessed man!

Moving forward I'm intrigued as to how I can better live the worshipful life, breathe worshipful breath, speak with a worshipful tongue and serve with a worshipful body and mind (Romans 12:1-2). I pray that God strengthens us all as we pursue the disciple's life.

Worship Recap 10.16.11... "When The Church is Church"

I thought we might be a little flat after last night's Night of Worship but that wasn't the case. Nine hours later we were ready to go. We rebounded with a strong effort that included some fine group vocal moments.

Continuing with our Formed and Re-formed series, the focus of our message was on the church as a community of people. It must really bring a smile to God's face when we get it, and live it.

It was my plan for this season to expand the size of our team and so far it's been wonderful. We've experienced richer vocals, added percussion and another layer of keyboards. The most enjoyable part for me, though it's still a teaching point, is the growth in the need vs. greed question. Do I need to play this note or do I just want to play it?

All things were visibly intertwined this morning. On a day when our focus was on standing in and living God's grace, there were so many opportunities to be graceful. I love when that happens.

Once again we got a very late start to rehearsal, but we were able to overcome it because we had had such a great rehearsal Thursday night.

As a worship leader there are weeks when it's hard to find applicable songs to enhance the focus of the word... that was not the case this week.

"We find our approach to God through the life and teaching of Jesus..." this was the second week of our Formed and Re-formed series. I've really been inspired while writing and building the music plans so far. I'm looking forward to the weeks to come.
There were some very sweet vocal arrangements today. The effort put out at rehearsal this past week was evident this morning.

I spent the latter part of this past week at forgecon in Ocean Grove, NJ... this has become my favorite conference. I love that there's a living-room vibe that hangs over this event. I'll blog later this week after I have some more time to unpack all that's stored away.

Something Beautiful & New Promo

The follow up to "The Twelve" will be released on Tuesday, October 4. It's a project that focuses on the tolerance and inclusiveness that can be found in a life of abundant love. Through this love the aim is that we can learn to touch people emotionally, physically and spiritually.

As always there was much prayer and meditation over the conception and eventual completion of this project. My prayer is that it touches the hearts and minds of those who are on the path, and opens the gates of those who are struggling to find their way.

A roller-coaster of a morning. Lots of thrills and spills... very exciting!

Our message today was "God 101", a simple, though most important, message about love (and how we treat one another) that defines who we are. We sang about living our lives through our Father's eyes.

Our team is growing again, and as our numbers grow our individual contributions have to get smaller. We seem to be embracing this concept which in turn is helping us to lead with one voice.

Hope of The World (You Are The Answer)

"Hope of The World" speaks of a positive future, strength in the face of down times, and the answer to all that weighs on us.

This has always been an uplifting song when sung in our church or any place for that matter. It was in my plan for a concert I did last Friday night and when I introduced the song in a reflective 9/11 prayer it took on a whole new meaning. We as believers have a hope, a hope that's built on nothing less than Jesus' love and rigthousness.

What a great ministry. I always walk away from these dates feeling good inside.

Whose Voice Are You Writing For?

As I enter a new season of writing I've become more and more aware of whose voice I'm writing for. It's such an honor to be chosen to write for God's people. When we write we are in a position to put the words into our congregation's mouth that they will sing back to God. We are guiding their voice in worship at that moment. What an awe inspiring responsibility.

Composing and arranging for the church is different then doing so for yourself. There are melodic ranges to consider and just as importantly the vocabulary of your church. Singing in the right key and using the language that your pastor uses can be a very powerful way to worship.

This is not to say that we shouldn't continually make an effort to stretch the boundaries of our congregation, but when we do so we need to be aware of who's voice we're writing for. If growing in our understanding, love and worship of our God should be an on-going development, then the songs we write and sing should also be in a constant position of growth.

Stretching the boundaries doesn't have to mean more difficult, it can sometimes just be a new descriptive adjective, or a song written from a different mode or scale, or just using different instruments to support the melody. Being in His image means that if it tickles our ear, it tickles His; if it inspires us to worship, then it please Him; and if it please Him, then we've honored Him.

So as I enter this new season it's my prayer that the notes and words of grace that flow from my pen, will flow through my congregation's voice and back to my Creator's ears... that we as a church will continue to grow in our worship journey, and that through that growth our voices will please Him.

Worship Recap 08.07.11... "He Alone Can Rescue"

I've reached that point, eleven months, where it's time to rest and recharge physically and spiritually. One month away from home and anything considered normal.

It's a month of reading what I didn't have time for, and listening to what I didn't have time for, over the past year. It's also been proven to be a very fruitful season to write.

This week's plan was full of energy for, and closeness with, God. The bulk of these songs have grown spiritually with us over the past month and are still vibrantly being sung.

So I'm off on the road as the service concludes and will see where the spirit leads for next week. He alone can rescue us physically, emotionally, and spiritually, from whatever is weighing on us.

Just a thought that was brought up this morning... if there are so many churches, why are there so many lost souls?

We had a great morning of worship, all the pieces fit together perfectly. Though enduring this current heat wave has become another thorn that's hurt attendance lately.

Our message today was inspired by the treasure parables. It was perfect for me considering I lost a great treasure last evening as a good friend past way.

We ended up with four replacements on our team today due to various reasons. The missing [your gifts are always missed] were not the center of my attention, the able bodies provided by God were. Each week our team looks the way God wants it to look. An important lesson well learned!

I woke up an hour early this morning with the sun shining through my window... my open window. No big deal you say? Well it was the first morning in recent memory where I could say that, so it was a nice way to start the day.

We received a different view of the sower parable, one that focused on the sower instead of the state of the ground. I love how His word can have so many meaningful moments in our lives.

We stumbled through a few songs today... it happens, but our greater focus was not on the arrangements but the worship.

Worship Recap 06.19.11... "Who Is God?"

Our message was inspired by Matthew 28:16-20. It was shared be a guest speaker [Thanks Jeremy, I enjoyed sharing with you both Saturday and Sunday] who asked us... Who is God? Amazing how such a simple question can raise so many answers.

I created a medley of Chris Tomlin's "Holy Is The Lord" and the traditional hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty" and was pleased with the comments and participation.

I also found myself writing a new musical setting for "Go, Make Disciples"... it was just a simple call and response verse with a bridge that we sang together. This was a great song to close with following the message and the congregation picked it up quickly.

Stepping Back to Re-Focus

I was really blessed to be invited to participate at St. David's 60th Revival Concert last weekend. What a great energizing and spiritual experience. When I think about sixty years of ministry I can't help but wonder how many lives have been touched?

I've been around a little less then sixty years, but I've got an appreciation for how long that really is. That's a lot of praising and worshiping not to mention the fellowship and most importantly the discipling.

We are always involved in the process of doing God's work. We are creating history on a daily basis. Some of us have been in service for long periods of time at one location while others have been used for shorter intervals at multiple places. Some of us serve the masses while others serve smaller communities.

Being in His service is really what's important. Allowing Him to use us in whatever capacity that He has planned. Trusting in Him. What a blessing it is to be called to be a part of spreading His word.

The past few days have been invigorating as I've gained a new perspective on my part of the process. In my case stepping back and seeing the larger picture has helped me focus back on where I'm currently being called to minister.

Our message this week was from Acts 1:6-14, and revealed some light on how to witness to the world.

It's not my nature to be a standing on the soap box kind of guy. My attitude and response to the life that happens to me and around me has been the strongest reflection of my faith.

Losing my teaching position [due to the school closing] two years ago was a time when more than a few people inquired as to how I could remain so calm and joyful in that desperate and dark period.

Through those last few weeks I was able to share where my strength came from and in hindsight, lives were touched, and lives were changed. There are just so many ways to witness.

Make Them Ready

How often do you pray for your team? Jesus prayed for his, "Make them ready for your service through your truth; your teaching is truth” (John 17:17, NCV).

There are seasons when service comes easy, and then there are seasons when it gets buried under all of life's distractions. You know the feeling, like there just doesn't seem to be enough time or enough energy. If you've felt it, chances are someone on your team has also.

On any given Sunday, there's most likely someone on your team that's struggling with conflict. Jesus knew that for his team to stay strong and focused, they needed to fix their eyes on the truth. So he prayed for them. Do yourself, your team, and your God a favor and pray.

Father, as I take this time to be with you, I'm humbled by the honor it is to serve you. Lord watch over our team and care for them as they maneuver through the week. Handle us with your unswerving love. Feed us with your word. Strengthen us with your wisdom, and bless us as we prepare for the moment of leadership this weekend. Amen.

We lost both of our female soloists within twelve hours of our service this morning. What are the odds?

So after lots of scurrying around at our pre-service rehearsal we shared an energetic and spirit filled time together. Another remninder that God always provides all that we need.

With the voices missing it was the perfect setup for a short and honest invitation to our congregation concerning our ministry. Sometimes I think we forget that being a salt and light person doesn't always require us to leave our own campus. That there are many opportunities to serve throughout the services each weekend.

Worship Recap 03.27.11

I had trouble sleeping the past two nights. Tossing and turning, just very unsettled. So it was no surprise that I woke up this morning with a stiff neck and a light headache.

My plan was to really shake things up a bit this week using upright bass and the cajon on a couple of songs but all the planning was put on hold when our bass player canceled out this morning.

I had my electric gear which wasn't going to work so I quickly drove back home to collect my acoustic setup and re-arranged the songs in my head while I was driving. We had already lost our mid-week rehearsal and now had a very small pre-service window, so we ran through what we could with piano, acoustic guitar and light percussion.

As I prayed before the service I was drawn to a verse surrender everything in faith and wait on God. So with no time left, instead of trying harder, I trusted.

You already know how this worked out. He always provides what we need. Standing at the mic it isn't always clear how He's working... but He's working.

We had a wonderfully, spring like, vibrant service this morning. There was a lot of energy and congregational involvement. And two baptisms to top it off.

One of our music missionary's was home on a break and sat in with the band. Thanks Andrew for bringing your spiritually committed heart and musical gifts to the platform this morning. It was a joy to share with you.

At the moment it feels like we're in a fresh state as a team. Rotating players more than ever and stretching some boundaries musically. I'm optimistic about the future, and about the direction of the team.

I'm three weeks into a medical condition that can't be diagnosed, and one's mind starts to wander to the wrong places as the days of uncertainty mount up... so I was glad to be in God's presence this morning. It really did a world of good to be in a position of worship and praise.

We got a late start due to the time change no doubt, but rebounded well and found a spiritual place to lead from.

We closed with an old favorite that we hadn't done in forever. We started it off with a traditional verse from an old hymn and allowed the congregation's energy to lift the song up. What a joy!

What a great relaxed service this morning. I'd love to bottle up these kinds of days, but then again they wouldn't be special if they occurred every week.

With everyone arriving early, rehearsal went well with what seemed like an endless amount of time. We had a very slow methodical review of each arrangement and it payed off later during the service.

I changed our sending song late Saturday night after leading worship at our Heartsong service earlier that evening. During that service our pastor took an unexpected turn for me and led the congregation directly to a song that I'd written a year or so ago.

Technology being what it is today, I was able to call up the song on my Ipad and flow seamlessly right into it to close the evening service. It worked so well I flew it into our Sunday plan.

Every worship leader needs a Bob. A Bob is someone who's sole purpose is to be what the team needs. A Bob sacrifices all for the team. A Bob will play whatever and whenever needed without a second thought. A Bob never complains. A Bob is selfless.

My Bob is Bob Solarz. He's my right hand guitar/bass/mandolin player. I can't think of one time in my ten plus years at Gloria Dei when Bob has not been what I needed. He has done this without question. Bob has been asked to play multiple instruments, to turn up, to turn down, to turn his amp around. To stand here, to stand there, to stand over there. None of that ever seems to be important to him, What is important, is what he thinks I need on that given Sunday to please God.

So it was so nice to back him up as he sang Matt Redman's If I Have Not Love this morning. I can't express how much joy I had in being what he needed for a change. I can count on one hand how many times I've asked him to sing. So this was a special moment for me as I know it was for him. He delivered a wonderful, and spiritual offering that I know the congregation appreciated.

My Bob's a blessing... and he was awesome as always this morning.

Ever wonder if God can hear you? ...if he understands your frustration? ...if knows what's on your heart when your quiet?

Today I just couldn't get comfortable. My guitar was just missing in my mix. It didn't matter what emotion I might have been feeling, I couldn't express it musically because I couldn't hear it. I couldn't control it.

So I prayed, more then played, knowing that God knew what was on my heart. That he knew my struggle and how it was draining me spiritually.

This led me to living a different kind of worship moment this morning. It made me worship from a different place. In the end it was still satisfying. In the end it was still God and me hanging out, sharing, praying, and worshipping.

Hanging Together

Lately it seems that I'm surrounded by all these fragile situations. All around me are these crumbling foundations. Both close to home, and in the world at large, there seems to be an epidemic of weakness, sickness and failure.

Why do some relationships, friendships and marriages last? Why do some teams, bands and partnerships last? Why do some bonds, agreements and promises last?

Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor... Proverbs 20:3a [NLT]

My guess is that my relationships, my partnerships, and my promises that continue to exist do so because of my faith. My strength when threatened, my patience when tried, and my wisdom when questioned all come from a source much greater then me. Surely, on my own I would fail.

Hanging together for me is part of my faith journey. Hanging together is not a choice, but a church. It;s those who fill the roster of my accountability team. It's my Teacher, Coach and Best Friend who meets with me every morning for a walk.

My prayer is that we find a way to hang together [to love] not as a race, not as a city, not as a country, but as a world, as a people of God.

Lets start with the sun. I don't think it was out for more than a few hours all week, so waking up to a sun filled morning was an awesome start.

Our team had a more mature theme to it this morning. Just a scheduling quirk, nothing I had planned, so the vibe was a bit different [in a good way].

I changed up our arrangementss for The Heart of Worship and How Great Thou Art and both really felt good and were well received.

I loved our message this morning [Matthew 5:13-20] concerning the salt and light of the world. With all of our inclement weather, the salt symbolism really hit home for me.

I realized late Saturday night that my email was hacked. As I was preparing to get a good night's sleep my friends, family, associates, and congregation were receiving a less then appropriate message from me [well not from me, but my email intruder]. What a wired violated feeling. There were tons of emotions to filter through. The water around my boat was getting pretty choppy. It took a little extra prayer time to manage a good night's sleep.

This morning was a time of forgiveness, consolation for a friend experiencing a spiritual attack, replacing a depleted battery pack, and more than anything else a time to sing songs with and to God. Blessed!

I woke up at 6am with a killer headache and it's been hanging with me all day. I can't seem to shake it. It's probably attributed to not enough quiet time. It was just one of those weeks.

We were not as well practiced as usual as we began rehearsal this morning. Our mid-week rehearsal time had been canceled, and our music plan was a little more challenging this week, so we had a steep learning curve to manage and by all reports we succeeded. Praise God.

We received a different and interesting message on Psalm 22 that had a fable ring to it. And we also opened our time of worship with Audrey Assad's Winter Snow. This was a bit of a stretch for us but I liked the congregational response and the worshipful flow into Amazed. It's worth taking a look at again.

The illness bug came-a-callin' this week. In eighteen hours we lost two singers and our drummer. If it was a Wednesday evening attack it would have been bad enough, but a Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning visit really shook things up a bit.

Our bass player Gary moved to the cajon and Bob, one our guitarists, moved to bass. We juggled some vocals around and let the spirit lead.

A special thank you to today's sound crew [Rick, Kelly and Jack]. Our new monitor setup worked beautifully and the new monitors were a blessing... not to mention the amount of cable and instrument changes that were needed at the last moment.

Great message this morning focused on peaceful reactions and resolutions. Looking back I think we as a team demonstrated that message faithfully... I'm a blessed man. Thanks guys!

Another interesting and fulfilling service today. It makes me feel good that we're always looking for a better way to honorably worship our God. Each week we take another step forward while in the moment experiencing a fulfilling and spiritual interchange.

We made a dramatic monitor change after the service today. One that should alleviate some of the reoccurring problems we've had with monitor mixes. We also had a very productive discussion concerning our rehearsal approach and mindset. I can't wait for next week!

Resolution '11

The taste of wine that I experienced at midnight on New Years Eve was administered through communion. The song I sang was a song of worship. The celebration I participated in was one of praise.

This year I was invited by a small neighboring church to lead worship on New Years Eve. To worship in the new year, to lead the new year in with praise, worship and prayer... culminating with communion at midnight.

As we shared the sacrament of communion the new year hour passed and we could hear the world outside celebrating in their own way. It was a very surreal experience to be in God's house, and yet over hear a very different celebration going on just a wall removed.

There was a time when I spent the evening singing for the dollar. This year I sang for the joy. It used to be that I expected to be on the receiving end at the end of the night, but on this night I was the one serving.

After a post service meal and some fellowship my wife and I headed home. As I prayed that night one voice kept echoing in my head, one simple phrase kept repeating...

My resolution for this year... nothing but Christ and Him crucified.

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2)

Hi friends, the past week really took it's toll on my energy level and my discipline. So it was no surprise this morning that it took a little longer to loosen up, tune up, and humble up. But things always seem to fall into place when the spirit's allowed to lead.

The little things can really mess with your head if you're not careful. We had to change from using the piano to the keyboard because of tuning problems. It was only because that we're blessed with alternatives that the issue wasn't a big deal. Nice job by the tech team to quickly remedy the problem.

I found myself out of tune in the middle of our opening section and in re-tuning carelessly started the next song a whole step lower [though in tune]. It provided a little transposing lesson, on the run, for my young musicians.

But through it all I felt a warm spiritual glow washing over our worship today, and found more then a few places to smile and encounter our God.

Dynamic Living

During a break in rehearsals a few weeks ago I had a conversation with a worship leader from Clearwater, Florida concerning the dynamics of a song we had just played. Out of that short interchange developed this interplay between the two of us concerning the dynamics of life. A topic we both thought would preach.

I suppose some might say I'm a bit overboard concerning the dynamics of the songs I lead. But I just love the rush of energy that comes from a creative arrangement. Songs need to breathe to come alive.

And so it came about during our conversation that our lives tend to flow the same way. The hills and valleys might well be described as the crescendos and decrescendos of our lives. The fact is, that if we're alive, and breathing, then we're going to experience ups and downs.

So the question is how much control do we have in the arrangement of our lives? Well we certainly have a say in our lifestyle choices. And maybe the most important area we control would be our relationship with God. There will always be those outside factors that we have no power over, but even then our faith will no doubt have a say in just how quiet those times are.

Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." Sounds like God needs to have a say in the arrangement. Our part is determining if this is a collaboration or not. Too many times I'm guilty of doing the arrangement myself.

Proverbs 3:6 goes on to say, "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." That's a crescendo builder isn't it? I can feel the energy rising and the volume building. I can see the light at the top of the mountain as the db meter heads toward triple digits.

Like I said earlier, I'm ever conscious of the dynamics of the songs I play. Now I need to be ever aware of the dynamics of my life and my ever present collaborator.

Those few precious minutes created a calm that lingered with me when I left my house, and continued through my morning. It set the tone for my entire day.

Mannerisms from the Forge Conference

I traveled to the Forge Conference with a heavy heart. There was apart of me that didn't want to make the trip, but I won the free registration and felt that maybe God knew that I was gonna need to find strength and comfort at this time. I've led worship at my church for twelve years, and last Wednesday was my low point. Any number of things combined had led me to that place, you know how that works. So I traveled in a state of discord... confused, tired and disappointed. Where was the harmony that I loved?

We met in Ocean Grove, NJ which made for a warm retreat like setting. Right from the start my spirits were lifted by the community I found myself surrounded by. There's something in me that always draws me to water, so being two blocks form the ocean was awesome. It really brought the beauty of God's creation right to my doorstep. Every breath reminded me of God's undeniable love for me.
