'Jack' Sparrow

This morning I watched a small sparrow fight for it's freedom while captive in a pre-school classroom. Continually flapping it's wings in fluttering futile motions. Banging it's head repeatedly against the closed portion of the window. Frustratedly repeating the same actions over and over with no results.

How it got there is one question, and it's inability to escape is another.

Adventurous no doubt, it wandered through a portal that was unknown, that was intriguing, that was dangerous. It chose to leave behind the place nature had created for it. It turned it's back on all that was designed for it. Apparently even in the bird kingdom, things look brighter on the other side of the fence... or in this case, the other side of the window.

Escaping was not easy, under much stress,  it couldn't seem to locate the ability to use the same senses it possessed outside, on the inside. Unable to navigate safely, it continued to fly in harms way fortunately avoiding any serious injury.

Afraid to accept any friendly help or guidance, it stubbornly continued on it's own haphazard and frustrating journey. After much battering, dazed and confused, it came only by God's grace, to find the entry way in which to return home.

We also are often tempted by the world's charms and find ourselves lost, battered, and searching for the comfort and peace we once knew or always longed for.

God's purpose is very clear for us, (Psalm 99:5) to worship him and to bring glory to him. But broken as we are, we are susceptible to seasons or moments of wandering. Once off the path that God has provided, we quickly lose the light that guides us and can become disorientated as our little friend was. We then become a slave to the ways of society and it's false reasoning.

When that happens it's only by God's amazing love and saving grace that we can return home and be free again. I guess it's safe to say we'd all be better off by just being more mindful of the beauty, security, and harmony our God has already provided for us.

Once outside our lost sparrow flew as God had created. It rose with a fluid beautiful motion, free to glide through creation with a graceful peace. Leaving it's intended world our sparrow lost it's freedom in trying to find it. Sound familiar?

We are free to fly... we have been provided all of creation as a backdrop, we have been blessed with a spiritual compass to keep us on course, and we have been handed an owners manual in God's own word.

So fly, fly brazenly and confidently with eyes wide open, and recognize all that has been provided for you.

Pray on,
Eddy
