(A glimpse at the creation of this worship leader's weekly music plan.)
We're starting a new worship series this week. One that will work it's way through John 6 over the next three Sundays. Our reading this week is from verses 1-21 where we find Jesus feeding the five thousand.
My thought was to focus on our need to be hungry for Jesus (The Bread of Life). Fortunately we have a few songs that have, or were, staples of our repertoire over the past few years. This always makes it a little easier to sprinkle a few different lyrics and melodies over the series while still having one or two theme songs.
My normal routine is to pray for God's guidance to discern what he'd like us to sing. This is the best way I know to remove my personal spin.
The journey begins...
This week's warm up song is Rising by Paul Baloche. I came to this one easily. A favorite of ours and a wonderful gathering song we haven't done in a few months
Key line: We gather to worship, becoming a choir to sing your praise. Lifting our voices, joining our hearts in this house today.
I've been troubled by the opening song all week. There's was something unsettling about it but after a few days of singing it I'm at peace with You Are Good by Israel Houghton. It's a very powerful song for our community and a good reminder of how God always provides for us.
Key line: Lord you are good and your mercy endureth forever.
Oh Taste And See by Leeland was an easy choice lyrically and it was also in the same key as You Are Good along with being another congregational favorite. This song has a great breakdown section which allows for thematic focus. I'll be using Psalm 145:10-18 as a way of drawing us toward the message.
Key line: You open your hand and satisfy the desires of ever living thing. (Psalm 145:16)
For communion we're singing Taste And See by Tommy Walker. We've been using this quite often since it's release last summer. So easy to sing and so full of truth.
Key line: He's worthy of our praise. Here to feed our hungry souls.
Our lead in to the message will be Kathryn Scott's Hungry. Perfect for our message and a theme song for this series. A nice vertical moment of worship before we hear God's word.
Key line: Hungry I come to You for I know You satisfy.
Paul Baloche's Stir Up A Hunger will be another theme song and we'll be using it as our sending song this week. This is yet another one of our more engaging songs. It has a long history with us.
Key line: Stir up a hunger in my heart for You.
So that's it. No new songs this week, but we'll be tweaking some older arrangements to freshen things up.
Pray on,
Eddy
